Studies show the average worker is productive for only 2 hours and 53 minutes a day. The good news? Neuroscience knows how to fix that. There are ways to maximize focus, energy output and make your employees more productive without fretting.

Make a list of your to-do tasks

Many employees on your team make the to-do list the wrong way. And, it shows up in the result. A few ways to make the task list are:

Keep it small

Ask your employees to write their to-do list of 6 tasks and spread them out in a week. They should make it a point to complete these tasks gradually and pick next one when first is finished.

Schedule your tasks

As you write down the six tasks, prioritize them and allot their starting time. Ensure to keep the most mentally taxing tasks as a priority or the first thing you pick up when you come to office.

Start with first one

Call it writer’s block, creative constipation, or bad luck, but you're stuck on making the first move. Just keep the first task moving, as making the first move is the hardest.

Reward yourself for completing the tasks

Below the task, write two statements:

How will I reward myself once I am done with this task?

Why must I accomplish it?

Finish the task and don’t take too long breaks

Make it a point to keep the task rolling until it’s done.

Balance workload with AI tools

A survey of IT professionals found 71% of IT workers reported using AI tools to reduce workload. 95% of 2,000 IT professionals claimed experiencing significant benefits from using gen-AI in their work, according to a survey conducted by Freshworks.

When you are just starting out with AI, it may seem daunting at first, but as you grapple it becomes easy to comply with.

In the UK civil service trial, workers using an AI assistant reportedly saved about 26 minutes per day (≈ 2 weeks per year) on administrative tasks. AI is seeing the largest adoption since cloud computing.

Decrease working hours

Research on Asana found that employees spend 58% of their daily tasks busy searching for information, switching between apps, or attending meetings. If productivity means output per hour worked, many employees are wasting their time at work.

Reducing work hours increases productivity by eliminating idle time and allowing workers to recharge.

A large-scale trial in the UK (conducted through 4 Day Week Global) found that companies that reduced their work week (e.g., shifting towards a 4-day work week) reported a 24 % increase in productivity for output per hour.

In a study covering 2,500+ workers in Iceland who reduced weekly hours (from about 40 h to ~35-36 h) without a pay cut, the result was that “productivity and services remained the same or improved across most settings.

Build teams that disagree

Diverse teams that think differently will disagree because of their varied perspective. This leads to smarter and faster decisions.

Teams with diverse skills and perspectives outperform homogeneous teams by 35%.
